International Student travel insurance

Students studying

With stunning scenery, welcoming people and world-class educational opportunities, New Zealand is a great place to study overseas. But when it comes to travelling, there’s always room for the unexpected to happen.

That’s why it’s so important to protect yourself with quality international student travel insurance, which will give you the peace of mind to enjoy your time here with confidence. In fact, all international students are required to have medical and travel insurance to qualify for a New Zealand international student visa.

Our International Student travel insurance is designed to protect you while you’re living and studying in New Zealand. Whether it’s a stolen laptop, a broken bone or a bout of the flu, this comprehensive cover is tailor-made to give you the freedom to travel with certainty and focus on what matters.

Do students need travel insurance while studying in New Zealand?

Yes! To qualify for a New Zealand international student visa, it’s required that you have quality insurance that complies with the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students and is accepted by your educational institute.

This might sound confusing, but don’t worry; our International Student travel insurance is designed to meet these requirements and provide you with top-quality protection during your stay.

Students

Students have been choosing our international student travel insurance for 25 years, and we’ve worked hard to ensure it meets and exceeds your expectations. We offer an Individual or Family policy:

Individual: International student travel insurance designed for one person

Family: International student travel insurance designed for:

  • one person and any of their dependent children;
    or
  • one person, their spouse and any of their dependent children

These policies both include the following great benefits:

1. Medical and evacuation

Whether it’s a broken bone or serious illness, medical emergencies can be upsetting and stressful while you’re travelling. That’s why our policy includes cover for medical and evacuation expenses.

Please note that as a visitor to New Zealand, you’re also covered by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) if you’re injured in an accident, which can assist you in paying for treatments like GP services, dental and physiotherapy. You must claim through the ACC for accidental injuries prior to claiming through us.

2. Changes to your journey

Sometimes, things just don’t go to plan. Our policy includes cover for changes to your journey if an unexpected event means you need to alter your travel arrangements. For example, if you’re unable to continue your studies in New Zealand, you can be covered for student fees that you’ve prepaid and can’t recover or use.

3. Personal accident

Worst case scenarios aren’t nice to think about, but with our International Student travel insurance, you’ll be prepared if they happen. Our policy includes cover for personal accidents during your trip, including disablement and death during your journey.

4. Rental vehicle excess

Driving in New Zealand

With scenic drives, charming towns and plenty of coastline to explore, it’s no surprise that hiring a car is a popular way to explore New Zealand. However, it’s essential that your travel insurance includes rental vehicle cover in case the unexpected happens on the road. Our International Student policy includes rental vehicle excess cover of up to $1,500 per person, per year.

5. Personal liability

Our International Student travel insurance also includes cover for personal liability, to protect you in the event that you become legally liable or incur legal expenses due to negligence.

6. Cash and travel documents

We also cover your cash and travel documents, like your passport. These items can be expensive and stressful to replace, so it’s important to choose an insurance policy that protects these valuables.

7. Baggage and personal items

Stolen, lost or damaged personal belongings can be frustrating and expensive. We know how important these items are to your studies and for keeping in contact with home, which is why our policy includes cover for your personal items like laptops, phones and luggage.
