Overseas funeral expenses

In the event of a death whilst travelling, there can be large expenses to manage and sensitive arrangements that differ country to country. To assist you or your family with the arrangements, we will pay up to $15,000 per deceased person, towards either the overseas funeral expenses, or the return of the remains to New Zealand.

In the event you wish to have an overseas funeral, we will pay actual and reasonable costs for the funeral, in the area where the death has occurred, or to cremate or embalm the body.

Should there be a desire to return your loved one to their home town, we will help arrange this and pay for the safe return of their remains as required.

There is also cover for the cost of a scheduled return economy flight for an immediate family member to assist with arrangements.

The estate of the deceased should contact Southern Cross emergency assistance, as soon as is reasonably possible, so we can begin assisting the estate with any necessary arrangements depending on the wishes of the family.

We will pay this benefit, even if the death is due to something in our General Exclusions. We don’t cover overseas funeral expenses arising from a terminal condition confirmed before the start of your journey.
