Travel insurance is essential for any international holiday, but finding the right policy isn’t always easy. What kind of cover do you need? Is it the right option for your holiday? What about pre-existing conditions? We’re here to answer these questions and help you compare travel insurance policies so you can find the best cover for your next adventure.

What is covered by travel insurance?

Let’s start with the basics. Any good travel insurance should cover you for a few key things:

  1. Medical emergencies
  2. Lost, stolen or damaged valuables
  3. Flight delays and cancellation
  4. Ancillaries like rental vehicle excess

Finding a policy that covers each of these things isn't difficult. The trick is in finding a policy that has decent benefits for each, at an affordable price. For example, you may find that some providers don’t cover emergency dental treatment, cover if your flight is delayed, or provide any cash allowance to make a hospital stay more comfortable. On the other hand, you may find a policy that includes all of these benefits but to a very limited degree.

What isn’t covered by travel insurance?

Generally speaking, travel insurance is there to protect you from unexpected events. So if you are breaking the law or don’t heed the warnings of travel advisories, any loss you suffer overseas isn’t usually considered unexpected. Most travel insurance policies won’t cover you for:

  • Breaking the law
  • Ignoring travel warnings on safetravel.govt.nz
  • Loss, damage or theft of unattended luggage
  • If you’re under the influence of alcohol or non-prescription drugs
  • Loss that happens due to an event that was forecasted or predicted before you bought your policy
  • Pre-existing medical conditions that weren’t declared when you purchased your policy

How does our travel insurance compare to others?

Which insurance policy is right for you?

It’s important to choose the right policy for your kind of holiday. At Southern Cross Travel Insurance, our TravelCare cover includes two options:

Single Trip

Our Single Trip Policy is perfect for those one-off holidays. It covers you for the entire journey to one or multiple destinations, for a journey duration of up to 12 months.

Annual Multi-Trip

If you’re planning on taking several trips a year, our Annual Multi-Trip policy might be a more cost (and time) effective choice than shopping around for travel insurance every time you travel. Once purchased, you’re covered for an unlimited number of return journeys overseas, over a period of 12 months commencing on your start date of insurance. You can choose to have journeys covered up to a maximum of 30, 60 or 90-day in length.

We also offer policies for working overseas and international students.

Finding the right travel insurance policy for your next holiday is only a matter of research. Get an instant quote today to find out what your policy will cost.
