Compare travel insurance

Travel insurance is essential for any international holiday, but finding the right policy isn’t always easy. What kind of cover do you need? Is it the right option for your holiday? What about pre-existing conditions? We’re here to answer these questions and help you compare travel insurance policies so you can find the best cover for your next adventure.

What is covered by travel insurance?

Let’s start with the basics. Any good travel insurance should cover you for a few key things:

  1. Medical emergencies
  2. Lost, stolen or damaged valuables
  3. Flight delays and cancellation
  4. Ancillaries like rental vehicle excess

Finding a policy that covers each of these things isn't difficult. The trick is in finding a policy that has decent benefits for each, at an affordable price. For example, you may find that some providers don’t cover emergency dental treatment, cover if your flight is delayed, or provide any cash allowance to make a hospital stay more comfortable. On the other hand, you may find a policy that includes all of these benefits but to a very limited degree.

What isn’t covered by travel insurance?

Generally speaking, travel insurance is there to protect you from unexpected events. So if you are breaking the law or don’t heed the warnings of travel advisories, any loss you suffer overseas isn’t usually considered unexpected. Most travel insurance policies won’t cover you for:

  • Breaking the law
  • Ignoring travel warnings on
  • Loss, damage or theft of unattended luggage
  • If you’re under the influence of alcohol or non-prescription drugs
  • Loss that happens due to an event that was forecasted or predicted before you bought your policy
  • Pre-existing conditions that weren’t declared when you purchased your policy

How does our travel insurance compare to others?

Not only does our TravelCare cover include a great list of benefits, but it also has an enviable reputation among travellers and the insurance industry. In fact, market-leading consumer research and ratings organisation, CANSTAR, gave us the award for Outstanding Value for Travel insurance - International 2018.

Other reasons our travellers love Southern Cross Travel Insurance include:

Delay cover

Our delay cover is up to 15 times that of comparable insurers. The maximum amount of cover we offer if you are delayed overseas is $30,000 (terms and conditions apply). This is compared to $5,000 by 1Cover, $5,000 by World Nomads, and $2,000 by TID, Worldcare and Covermore:

We pride ourselves on our honest and supportive claims team. In the last financial year, we paid 85% of claims in Australia. There are no smoke and mirrors when it comes to your claim - we take each and every incident seriously and do our utmost to ensure you receive the right compensation, no matter the cost. In fact, we paid a claim of $1,300,000 to an unfortunate Australian traveller who needed air evacuation from South East Asia in 2016.
