The Future of Travel

Is this the end of the O.E.? Is the USA off our itinerary? Is a family holiday up next or a surf school?

In this year’s Future of Travel report we looked at how New Zealanders travelled in 2025, what matters to them, and what they are planning for 2026.

We found travel is still a priority for many New Zealanders, but how we do it is changing

  • We’re seeing a huge 20% drop in Gen Z interest in working overseas
  • 74% of travellers who are wary of some destinations, now consider the United States top of their ‘less likely to visit’ list
  • A holiday with family is #1 for 54% of New Zealanders, followed by beach breaks at 34% or immersive cultural experiences at 28%

How we uncovered our insights

The Future of Travel report distills the key findings from an online survey conducted by InsightsHQ from 18 November to 22 December 2025 with a national representative sample aged 18+ of 1,072 New Zealanders and covers recent travel trends, evolving destination preferences, the impact of living costs on travel, attitudes towards travel insurance, generational differences in travel behaviour, and the rise of AI adoption.
