If, as a result of an unexpected event, the rental vehicle you have hired is stolen or damaged during your journey, we will reimburse you for any non-refundable excess payable to the rental vehicle company of up to $5,000.
As all rental vehicle companies and their policies are different, we recommend you check what their excess is before you complete the hire agreement, and if their excess is equal to AUD $5,000 or less, at least you’ll know we have you covered.
What you need to know
We cover the excess on rentals of standard model motor vehicles or a motor home with a capacity to carry 8 persons including the driver, or a moped or motorcycle with a maximum engine capacity of 200cc.
You must hold a valid driver’s licence as required by the country you are in to be covered under your policy.
If you hire a motorcycle or moped, you must wear a helmet.
Remember a rental vehicle must be rented by you, from a licensed motor vehicle rental company, to be covered under your policy. To ensure you remain covered, you must not be in breach of any local driving laws or rules, or have breached the terms and conditions of the rental vehicle agreement.
Off-road use is not covered, so make sure you only use rental vehicles on formed or paved roadways and car parks.
What is an unexpected event?
We consider an unexpected event to be a cause or event that happens during your period of insurance that was sudden, unforeseeable or unintended; and was outside of your control, and could not reasonably have been anticipated or avoided.
