Pre-existing conditions

Pre-existing conditions are not automatically covered under your International Student policy. However, you can choose to seek cover for your pre-existing condition(s) (and pre-existing conditions of family members to be insured on your policy), by undertaking a medical assessment over the phone.

If you have purchased your policy online and would like to apply for cover for pre-existing conditions, please phone us on 0800 784 691 (within New Zealand) or +64 9 979 6597 (outside New Zealand) Monday – Friday, 8.30am to 5pm NZST to complete a medical assessment within 31 days of the start date of insurance. We will advise whether we can offer cover for your pre-existing conditions, and confirm cover offered for your pre-existing conditions in writing

What is a pre-existing condition?

We consider a pre-existing condition to be any medical or physical condition (including congenital conditions, anomalies or defects but excluding congenital blindness and deafness), symptom or circumstance which that person is aware of, or a reasonable person in that person’s circumstances ought to have been aware of for which advice (including awaiting test results), care, treatment, medication or medical attention has been sought, given, or recommended prior to your start date of insurance and regardless of whether or not a medical diagnosis has been made.

If you have questions around what you should or shouldn’t declare on your policy, please contact us for advice.
