From the tropical beaches of Phuket to the bustling streets of Bangkok, Thailand has so much to offer to travellers of all tastes. The country enjoys a reputation for serene landscapes and exciting cities in equal measure, and has long been one of Southeast Asia’s most popular travel destinations.
However, Thailand is also regarded as a significantly dangerous place for international tourists, with hundreds suffering fatal accidents each year. This concerning statistic has even sparked debate around enforcing compulsory travel insurance for visitors.
Road, swimming and boating accidents are some of the most common causes of serious and fatal injury for travellers in Thailand. For this reason, travel insurance that covers accidents and emergencies is essential. But Thai holidays can also be spoiled by a cunning thief or a bad street food meal, which is why you need a comprehensive policy with a wide range of benefits.

Compulsory travel insurance
The Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports are considering enforcing compulsory travel insurance for international visitors to Thailand. This discussion comes in response to a high volume of uninsured travellers who have required costly medical attention in the country, some of whom have not been able to pay their bill.
If you suffer an injury and need medical assistance in Thailand, it’s strongly recommended that you present a copy of your travel insurance certificate to hospital staff. There have been cases of travellers being denied treatment when they can’t prove they’re insured for medical costs.
Medical and emergency cover
Whether you’re planning a snorkeling safari of Phuket, a motorbike ride through rice paddies, or even a culinary tour of Bangkok’s renowned street food scene, your Thai holiday will be packed full of adventure. We know that these activities are what makes a holiday unforgettable, which is why you're covered for unlimited medical expenses and evacuation if the unexpected happens.
However, it’s also important to understand the conditions of your cover to avoid footing the bill for unexpected costs. For example, if you’re riding a motorbike and have an accident, you will only be covered if you hold a valid driver’s licence as required in Thailand, you are wearing a helmet at all times, and the engine capacity is less than 200cc. Likewise, if your bag is stolen while left unattended, you will also be denied cover.
Am I covered for motorbike and car accidents in Thailand?
Motorbikes and scooters are a popular way to explore Thailand’s picturesque countryside. However, as anyone who has visited the country will attest, traffic seems to have a dangerous mind of its own and road conditions are treacherously poor in most areas.
These factors combine to make Thailand’s roads incredibly dangerous for locals and visitors alike. In fact, almost half of all tourist deaths in Thailand are caused by road accidents. To help you to stay safe and insured when driving in Thailand, remember to:
- Always obey local driving laws
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Always hire the vehicle from a licensed rental agency
- Only drive on formed or paved roads and carparks
- Comply with the terms of the rental vehicle agreement
- Obtain a valid driver’s license as required in Thailand
Under our TravelCare policy, you are covered for rental vehicle excess of up to $5,000 if you have an accident, however you must comply with the terms and conditions of the policy to receive this cover.
Cover for natural disasters
Unfortunately, Thailand is no stranger to devastating natural events, like the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004 that killed thousands. More recently, serious flash flooding and typhoons have claimed the lives of thousands more, including international travellers.
If your pre-paid travel plans need to be changed or cancelled due to an unexpected natural disaster, and you purchased a policy before this event occurred, you will be covered under your TravelCare policy. But if you book your travel after a natural disaster has occurred, any changes to your travel plans relating to that may not be covered. After all, it can’t be considered an “unexpected event”.
Cover for laptops, phones and cameras
Valuable electronics are common victims of misadventure overseas. Whether it’s being stung by a cunning thief in a Bangkok market, or suffering an unexpected slip into the resort pool, your electronics can face danger from all sides.
Our TravelCare policy covers you for lost, stolen or damaged personal items, so you can focus on enjoying your holiday knowing that you’re protected from the unexpected.
