Staying safe in the Cook Islands

No one likes to think about what could go wrong when planning their dream holiday, but reading up about local risks is a good way to ensure your trip goes smoothly. Before you visit the Cook Islands, familiarise yourself with the following safety information:

  • Although the crime rate is low on the Cook Islands, thieves sometimes target tourists, especially at the beach, so never leave your personal belongings out of sight.
  • Cyclone season runs from November to April, but Mother Nature is unpredictable and storms can happen at any time. Ask your accommodation provider for their evacuation plan and your nearest shelter when you arrive.
  • Earthquakes and tsunamis can also occur in the Cook Islands. If this does happen on your trip it’s best to follow the advice of your accommodation provider and local officials, and move to higher ground if you're near the beach.
  • Take plenty of insect repellent and book accommodation that has a mosquito net over the bed as there are some insect-borne diseases, such as dengue fever.
  • If you’re pregnant, discuss your travel plans with your doctor as the Cook Islands has reported cases of Zika virus. 
  • Stick to bottle or boiled water and avoid any raw or undercooked food.

Local laws

There are a few local laws to be aware of on the Cook Islands:

  • If you're driving, monitor your alcohol intake.
  • Same-sex sexual activity between men is illegal.
  • The Cook Islands' standards of dress and behaviour are modest, especially outside the resort areas, so cover up to avoid causing offence.

Common claims for the Cook Islands

Some of the more common claims we see from customers who have visited the Cook Islands include:

  • Scooter or moped related claims, such as injuries or damage to the scooter or moped 
  • Dog bites
  • Ear infections 
  • Skin infections from stepping on coral reefs in the lagoon
  • Items getting lost or damaged by the pool or beach, such as small electronic items (e.g. phones, tablets, smart watches), sunglasses and reading glasses. 
  • Lost GoPro’s when snorkelling
  • Changes to travel plans due to weather events
