Cheap travel insurance

Choosing the right travel insurance for your holiday can be a frustrating challenge. Confusing policies, hidden costs and lengthy exclusions can mean you end up paying more than you need to.

At Southern Cross Travel Insurance, we want to take the mystery out of finding the right cover for your holiday. We’re here to help you to protect yourself with a comprehensive and affordable policy for your next adventure.

How can I save money on my insurance?

Travel insurance can seem like an annoying extra expense, especially when you consider the cost of flights, accommodation and activities overseas. However, compared to the price of emergency medical care, lost luggage, delayed flights and damaged valuables, it’s easy to see why protecting yourself with comprehensive travel insurance is the smart financial choice.

Some of the highest medical claims we’ve paid have even exceeded $500,000.

Nevertheless, there are some simple ways you can save money on your travel insurance.

Don’t always choose the lowest price cover

You may be tempted to select dirt-cheap travel insurance, however before you commit to buy, it always pays to research the policy carefully. Many budget insurance policies have minimal benefits and a long list of exclusions.

Saving a few dollars on a budget policy may seem like a good option now, but when the unexpected happens overseas and you find you’re not covered, it can end up costing you lots in the long run.

Instead, choose a policy that you can be confident in. This year, we’re proud to have received the Canstar award for Outstanding Value for Travel Insurance - International 2018.

Understand your travel insurance

There’s nothing more annoying than having an insurance claim rejected because you accidentally violated your policy’s rules. For example, you may not be covered if your electronics are damaged in checked luggage, or if your bags are stolen while left out of your sight.

One of the most common mistakes travellers make with travel insurance is failing to understand their cover. Always read your policy carefully so you can be confident that you stay insured overseas. Things to consider to avoid having a claim rejected include:

How do I choose the right policy?

There are several things to consider when choosing the best policy for your holiday, which will also impact the price of your insurance:

  1. Your destination
  2. The duration of your journey
  3. Who you travel with
  4. The benefits you need
  5. How frequently you travel
  6. Whether you are taking any high value items with you

1. Your destination

Your destination can affect the price of your policy, based on its distance from New Zealand, the cost of medical care in the country and its risk rating. Insurers may not be able to provide cover for some destinations (like those with a ‘High Risk’ or ‘Extreme Risk’ rating on The USA, Brazil, France and Japan were found to be some of the most expensive destinations for insurance policies.

2. The length of your trip

The duration of your holiday can also impact the price of your insurance. Our TravelCare Single Journey policy covers you for trips of up to 365 days, including multiple destinations.

3. Who you travel with

Some insurers charge higher fees if you're travelling with dependent children. However, our TravelCare policy provides cover for dependent children (aged 17 years and younger) under the policy of their guardian for no extra cost+.

4. The benefits you need

The benefits you require will also determine the cost of your travel insurance. For example, if you’re travelling with high value items, you need to specify these and pay an additional premium for the extra cover you receive. Insurers may also charge higher fees depending on the activities you’ll be enjoying overseas, like skiing or going on a cruise.

At Southern Cross Travel Insurance, we don’t have specific policies for specific activities - our TravelCare policy covers you for activities like skiing and cruising at no extra cost (subject to terms and conditions). It’s important that you understand the general exclusions of your policy before you buy. For example, under our TravelCare policy you won’t be covered if you’re under the influence of alcohol or non-prescribed drugs, if you break local laws, if you’re hitchhiking or if you ride a motorbike without a helmet.

You can see a full list of the activities we cover and general policy exclusions in our Product Disclosure Statement.

5. How often you travel

How frequently you travel is another thing to consider when finding the right policy for you. If you’re travelling internationally more than three times in a year, our Annual Frequent Traveller policy could be a cheaper option. Under the policy, you’re covered for 12 months from the date you select, no matter how many times you travel, for trips each no longer than 90 days.

6. Whether you are taking high value items with you

Travelling with high value items can affect the price of your insurance. You will need to specify these expensive items when you purchase your policy, and then pay for an additional premium to cover them.

Our TravelCare policy can cover you for up to $10,000 per specified item, with a maximum of $15,000 per journey (terms and conditions apply).
